One Way to Improve Your Balance

Balancing poses.

I notice people have a love/hate relationship with standing balancing poses. Many factors can play a role in how you balance, including: hydration, sleep, strength, mental focus and mobility.

One great way to increase your glute and leg strength for poses like Tree, Eagle and Half Moon is to do squats. Try to move through a full range of motion (all the way down and all the way up) and really squeeze your bum muscles. Keep your torso upright and your chest facing forward. Start with 10 slow ones and increase from there.

If you want to challenge yourself more, try holding weights (or baby or pet or laundry detergent!) when you squat. And for fun, you can try split squats: place the shoelace side of one foot on a chair behind you and bend your standing leg, while keeping your torso upright.

Happy squatting!
